In 1764 Parliament passed the Sugar Act which aimed at raising revenue for Britain after the struggle they had had with the country of France. Britain had acquired control over much of the Americas but held many losses. Parliament then chose to enact the Sugar Act renewing and much more effectively enforcing the tax for molasses than they previously had done with the Sugar and Molasses Act of 1733. The act also listed more foreign goods to be taxed including sugar, certain wines, coffee, pimiento, cambric and printed calico, and further, regulated the export of lumber and iron. The colonists had been evading the previous version of this tax by getting molasses from the French West Indies which was cheaper than the British product.
